The Lecture at York
This week I attended one lecture at York, and it was interesting experiment. I graduated two Universities in one of small towns of Russia, so I can compare lectures in these two different places. There are difference between numbers of student, behavior of student and stile of teaching.
First of all, numbers of student in my native town fewer then at York. For example, about 50 students attend a general lecture every day at the University in my town. In contrast, there are about 500 students per lecture in Toronto’s Universities. Therefore, lecture halls at York are bigger than in my town.
Second, it is a big difference between behaviors of students. You will never see students with notebooks at lectures in my town. Also, students can not eat food and drink coffee during a lecture. However, there are many students with notebooks at lectures at York and they can eat food and drink coffee during a lecture.
Finally, because of small groups of student and small lecture halls in my town instructors do not have a necessity of using microphones and other supporting goods during lectures. In addition they give a lecture material as dictation and student do not have a chance to listen and understand it. In contrast, instructors use a microphones and computers with slide show at Universities in Toronto.
In conclusion, you can see these differences very clear and I think lectures at York are more useful than in my town.

Hi Yulia,
There are certainly big differences between York and the universities you attended at home. I'm glad you found York better although I think these big first year classes are not always the best for students. It is good that the teachers use powerpoint and microphones to keep large number of students paying attention, but small classes would also have some definite advantages.
